My Drone Journey
My name is Richard. I'm a semi-retired Web developer and generalist IT guy who decided to become a drone pilot. This site is the story of my journey, along with some videos and pictures of videos that I shot for practice, or just for fun.
I've been in aviation in some capacity or another since 1976, so the process of becoming an FAA-Certificated Part 107 Remote Pilot was more of a transition for me than a completely new endeavor. But I hadn't flown in some years and was rusty. I also wanted to learn drone-specific knowledge because although I'd flown R/C airplanes when I was younger, I'd never flown a drone.
I decided to enroll in a Part 107 training course by Pilot Institute. I think it was a good decision because I passed my FAA Part 107 commercial drone pilot test on the first try with a grade of 97.
I also acquired drone-specific knowledge as relating to regulations, safety, and flight proficiency. Most importantly, as an FAA-certificated remote pilot, I am allowed to fly drones for commercial purposes.
This site, however, is more about my personal observations and experiences along the way, as well as many videos I shot just for fun or for their historical value. There are no client videos here.
I've also included some videos of my practice flying (mistakes and all). We can learn from our mistakes and other people's mistakes; so feel free to learn from mine.
By the way, I got the title for the site while I was shooting one of the Letchworth Village videos. I heard some people passing behind me. One asked the other, "What's that guy doing?" The other answered, "Oh, he's just some random drone guy." I liked it, so I registered the domain and used it as the name of this site.
Thanks for coming along for my drone journey.
